Movies!

What better time to stay home (or go out) for some movies than Thanksgiving weekend, eh? A little turkey (or tofu, if you're like me), some football, and the best that Hollywood can throw at you. I count four that Kia and I indulged in this weekend:

1) A wizard prodigy is faced with his most difficult challenges yet, including asking a girl to a dance
2) A dedicated and high strung fish father searches for his lost son
3) An OCD filmmaker/plane maker...well, tries to make films and planes and sort of loses it
4) A workaholic biologist investigates human sexual behavior and finds out some interesting things on the way

See, told you it was big

This is why I love the interweb:

As I finish my last post, I decide to browse through some other random blogs. The first one I stumble on? It's in Swedish. I think. But as I'm about to continue on my way, a few words start popping out at me....Washington....Neuroscience konferansen....30000 deltagare.....someone else, in Sweden no less, posted about going to the same conference. What are the chances? Actually, they're pretty good. Out of 30,000 people, you'd think at least one other person would have a blog.

She (I assume it was a she, for some reason) one-upped me, though. It appears that she somehow got her hands on "donuts och Mountain Dew, smaskens!"

Yeah, if I got some free donuts and Dew, I'd say "smaskens!" too.

Science dorks convene

I was in DC a couple of weekends ago (the 12th-15th) for the annual Society for Neuroscience conference. This is a mammoth affair. Some estimates put the influx of neuroscientists around 30-40,000 people. This is a lot of people, particularly when everyone goes to lunch at the same time. Needless to say, it's almost impossible to get a quick bite within a 5-mile radius of the Washington Convention Center when this thing is going on. But overall, what I saw of the conference was good. For the most part, I was seeing old friends and colleagues, catching up and generally just enjoying people who I used to see more of. I stayed at the Churchill Hotel on Connecticut Ave in Dupont. Shmansy, I must say. I certainly wouldn't have been able to stay there if it were on my dime. But I did. I roomed with Tal, and David stayed with us. I liked staying close to Dupont, but didn't relish the walk up Connecticut every night.

During the four days, I ate well. I can't remember all the places, but one highlight was a Latin-Asian fusion place where I had Ahi tuna and wasabi mash with David and Sara. I also like breakfast at Luna, and this time was no exception. I met Aaron there my final morning.

Coffee was plentiful. I think I was constantly holding one. Went to some bars the first night with Larry, Josh, Laura, and David, and ended the night at Chi Cha Lounge. Played some shuffle board at Buffalo Billiards. The only exception to the "eating well" theme was at an NIMH post-doc recruitment event at a tapas place near the convention center. I think the extent of the food I ate there were a few olives and a roll. Big clunker there.

It's funny, coming back to a place (Oberlin, Boston, DC) is never quite the same as it was when I lived there. There's just something you get from living there for a long period of time that you can't possibly recapture in a visit of a few days or a week.

Another thing I realized: it's often the people, and not the place, that you remember most. So while I did want to go and see some of the old hangouts, I also just wanted to reunite with some of the people that made the place great. I also realized that I had somehow managed to gather folks from my four 'spots' from the last 10 years of my life (Mass, Oberlin, DC, St. Louis)* into one spot. And sometimes I'd be introducing people and realize that it was a little crazy that they were coming together this way. Most of the time, I was just confused as to who had met who. But altogether, it was great to bring it all together for myself for this one weekend.

Thus concludes a LONG overdue post about my little journey to the District.

*[Interesting side note: if you connect the dots, going from Boston to Oberlin to DC to St. Louis, continuing the pattern I should end up somewhere in Georgia or Northern Florida for my next stop]

Wicked Good TIme

Kia and I and some other peeps (yup, peeps) are going tomorrow to the Fabulous Fox to see Wicked. I'm looking forward to it, I've heard a lot of good things, although sometimes that's not always a good sign. I plan to leave the theater saying loudly, "The book was SOOO much better," despite the fact that I haven't read the book.

(Writing this post is slightly more difficult than normal, as Kia is running around me in a circle, doing the spastic little girl thing that Amy Poeler does on SNL...it's kind of funny, actually.)

Update on DC soon.

Update, son!

I think it's been a while since I last posted. I know this because Pete had this to say:

"your updates are mad infrequent, son!"

He's taken to using the word "son" at the end of nearly every sentence. It means he's better than me.

But it did spur me on to think that I haven't posted. Sure enough, I haven't. I guess I've been mad busy with school, son. I'm in the middle of writing a grant, which if I got it would give me funding for the next two years while I'm working on my dissertation, so I wouldn't have to be a TA or in any other way sell my body, mind, and soul to the psych department in exchange for funding. I'm putting my poster together for the Society for Neuroscience conference in DC that begins this weekend. Which reminds me: if you are in DC, I'm there Saturday to Tuesday. I don't plan to see much of the conference, but I do intend to see many many people who I see far too little of these days. Do find me, give us a call, son!

I also realized that I completely blew it with regard to my travel plans for the previously-mentioned conference. The DALAI LAMA is speaking at the conference on Saturday afternoon, but I'll be landing right around when he's finishing up. Just as well, it's going to be mobbed.

Kia's parents visited recently. We enjoyed their visit, and the use of their hotel pool. I haven't been in a pool in I don't know how long. Kia and I took full advantage of the big floating noodles that they had in the pool. Also, the hot tub. And the free breakfast. Not in the pool. Just in the hotel. Also, we revisited the spot at the state park in Illinois where Kia and I got engaged. Many pictures were taken.
